A Nurse for Mitch Page 9
As the minister continued with the ceremony, there was a small commotion somewhere in the crowd, and he tried to ignore it, hoping someone else would stop the person from ruining Mitch and Lydia’s special day.
“No!” A man’s voice shouted. “I won’t allow Lydia to marry this man.”
A gasp ripped through the air, the loudest voice being Lydia’s. She whipped around to face the intruder. Mitch was ready to punch this fool in the face for the outburst.
“Lydia, you cannot marry him.”
“Adam?” Lydia hitched a breath.
Inwardly, Mitch groaned. This was her fiancé. How could Mitch have forgotten about the other man?
The blonde man who looked to be at least ten years her senior, marched down the aisle, wearing the uniform of a Union soldier.
“Lydia, you can’t—”
“Stop right there, Adam.” She gave her former beau a scowl. “You have no right.”
“I don’t?” His eyes widened. “But we are engaged, so I have every right.”
Thad and Luke moved in front of Adam, stopping him from coming any closer.
“No, Adam. You gave up that right when you left me to pursue a career. I didn’t realize until after I met Mitch what it truly felt to be loved and admired – the way a woman should be.”
Mitch grinned, feeling victorious without having to say a word.
“Now, please leave.” She held strong. “So that I can marry the man I really love more than I thought possible.” She turned to Mitch and took hold of his hand again, smiling.
He smiled and nodded, turning them back toward the minister. “You may continue now.”
Mitch didn’t have to look to know when Adam had left, because the poor loser grumbled his discontentment the whole way out.
As his heartbeat settled to a regular beat, he enjoyed the rest of the ceremony… especially when the minister told him he could kiss the bride. Mitch took her in his arms and kissed her. She clung to him and kissed him back. Of course, they’d wait until they were alone before turning it more passionate.
They pulled away at the same time, but stayed in each other’s arms.
“Thank you,” he whispered.
“For what?”
“For saving me.”
She shook her head slowly. “But my dear, wonderful husband, don’t you know that you saved me right back? You were the reason I was able to experience true love.”
He caressed her cheek. “I hope you don’t become tired of it, because that is how our marriage is going to be… for the rest of our lives.”
“That sounds perfect – just like you.”
This time when they kissed, his mind closed off to everyone around them. He would start his new life the right way, by making his bride the happiest woman on earth.
